Bangladesh's universities have been the focus of protests and strikes, highlighting two major issues: the reinstatement of the quota system in government jobs and the introduction of the Prottoy pension scheme. The 2018 Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement, initiated by the Bangladesh General Students’ Right Conservation Council, demanded reforms in recruitment policies. The movement began on February 17, 2018, and spread nationwide by April 8. The government issued a circular abolishing all 56% quotas in the public service in October 2018, following protests by university students and jobseekers demanding reforms to the quota system that had been introduced in 1972.

The students argue that the quota system is discriminatory and hinders merit-based appointments in government jobs. The protests began on July 1, with students from various public universities participating. The movement escalated on July 6, when students from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Bangabandhu Bridge highway. The protests intensified on July 7, with a nationwide blockade program called the "Bangla Blockade."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's stance has changed significantly regarding the student protest compared to the past protest in 2018. She dismissed the anti-quota movement as unjustified, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the judicial process and court decisions. In 2024, she committed to upholding the High Court's verdict and calling for students to focus on their studies rather than protest.

The unarmed student protesters faced numerous attacks from the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in 2018 and this year, leading to widespread criticism.

Students who have a relationship with a freedom fighter, they also fight against the quota. Their thinking is the students who have the talent they have the right to get first priority. In any kind of government job, those who have the real talent deserve the job.Because of the quota system, those who have the talent don't get the first priority in job.So students fight against the system and they want no discrimination in the job sector.

As a student, I also want equality in the job sector. If I have the talent, it is my right to get first priority. I believe that the government of Bangladesh must remove the quota system because the demand of students in a country is very crucial.Students are the main for a country because without them the country is not able to go ahead.
