Today, I would like to learn about GKS.
GKS is short for 'Global Korea Scholarship', which is a scholarship given to foreign students coming to Korea to study at the National Institute of International Education under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea.
Apart from the fact that living in another country requires a lot of money, it's popular because it's the only possibility to get a D-2-7 visa that I mentioned in the last post.
Today, we will learn about the type of GKS and the scale of support.
1. Korea-Japan joint project to support international students in higher education
- Target: Foreigners whose applicants and parents both have Japanese nationality (Master's and Doctor's Degree program) / Students who are in their second year or higher at a Japanese university
- Size of support: Tuition, living expenses (KRW 800,000 per month), round trip airfare, medical insurance (within KRW 20,000 per month), settlement fee (KRW 200,000) (Master's degree program / One-year undergraduate program) / Participation fee for training programs such as tuition, accommodation, and round trip airfare (short-term undergraduate program)
2. South Korean government-invited scholarship system
- Target: All foreign university students enrolled in foreign universities
Scope of application: Bachelor(excluding academic programs exceeding 4 years or specialized academic programs of 3 years or more)'s course, master's and doctoral courses, and research courses
- Size of support: Airfare (actual expenses), settlement support fund (KRW 200,000), living expenses (KRW 800,000-900,000 per month), medical insurance premium (KRW 20,000 per month), Korean language course (KRW 800,000 per month), tuition fee (up to KRW 5 million per semester), Korean language excellence scholarship (KRW 100,000 per month), research fund (KRW 210-240,000 per semester), thesis printing fee (KRW 500,000-KRW 800,000 per semester), return reserve (KRW 100,000 per time)
3. Support for excellent exchange students
- Target: Scholarship candidate recommended by GKS Excellent Exchange Student Program Management University among foreign university students
- Size of support: round-trip airfare (real cost), reserve (KRW 200,000, once), living expenses (KRW 500,000 per month), medical insurance premiums (KRW 20,000 per month)
4. Support for excellent and self-funded international students
- Target: 250 self-funded international students studying at Korean universities
- Size of support: KRW 500,000 per month (up to 10 months)
5. invitation training for students from major countries
- Target: 60 outstanding university students from the top countries in Korea (1st to 50th) and 60 outstanding school students from schools with Korean language classes
- Size of support: Participation in training (special lectures, exchange of university visits, tour of cultural heritage sites and industrial facilities, homestay, etc.), round-trip airfare (actual expenses), traveler's insurance premiums, all amount required to participate in training
6. Invitation Training for ASEAN Science and Technology University Students
- Target: 120 outstanding science and engineering college students from ASEAN countries
- Scale of support: Participation in training (major lectures and experiments/practices, experience in related institutions such as research institutes and industries, experience in Korean cultural history), airfare (actual expenses), traveler's insurance premiums, room and board, training operation expenses
7. Invitation Training for African and Latin American University Students
- Target: 80 undergraduate students (40 in Africa, 40 in Latin America)
- Scale of support: Participation in training (major lectures and experiments/practices, experience in related institutions such as research institutes and industries, experience in Korean cultural history), airfare (actual expenses), traveler's insurance premiums, room and board, training operation expenses

지원 범위: 학사(단, 4년을 초과하는 학사과정 혹은 3년 이상의 전문학사 과정의 경우 제외), 석·박사과정, 연구과정
- 지원 규모: 항공료(실비), 정착 지원금(20만원), 생활비(월 80~90만원), 의료보험료(월 2만원), 한국어 과정(분기별 80만원), 학비(매 학기당 최대 500만원 이내), 한국어 우수자 장학(월 10만원), 연구비(학기당 21~24만원), 논문 인쇄비(50~80만원), 귀국 준비금(1회 10만원)
3. 우수 교환학생 지원
- 대상: 외국인 대학생 중 GKS우수교환학생 프로그램 운영 대학에서 추천한 장학생 후보자
- 지원 규모: 왕복 항공료(실비), 준비금(20만원, 1회), 생활비(월 50만원), 의료보험료(월 2만원)
4. 우수 자비 유학생 지원
- 대상: 대한민국 대학에서 수학중인 자비 유학생 250명
- 지원 규모: 매월 50만원(최대 10개월)
5. 주요 국가 학생 초청 연수
- 대상: 국내 외국인 유학생 수 상위국가(1~50위) 우수 대학생 60명, 한국어반 개설학교 우수 교교생 60명
- 지원 규모: 연수 참가(특강, 대학방문 교류, 문화유적지 및 산업시설 견학, 홈스테이 등), 왕복 항공료(실비), 여행자 보험료, 연수 참가에 필요한 모든 금액
6. 아세안 이공계 대학생 초청 연수
- 대상: ASEAN 국가의 우수 이공계대학생 120명
- 지원 규모: 연수 참가(전공강의 및 실험/실습, 연구소와 산업체 등 관계 기관 체험, 한국 문화역사 체험), 항공료(실비), 여행자보험료, 숙식비, 연수운영경비
