As winter arrives in Korea, a familiar snack starts to appear on every corner: hopang (호빵). Known for warming both body and soul on cold days, hopang is a beloved treat for Koreans. But when did this winter delicacy begin to capture the hearts of Koreans?

The history of hopang dates back to the 1970s when Samlip Foods first introduced it to the Korean market, establishing a tradition of steamed bread in Korea. Samlip Foods took inspiration from Japan and adapted this unique bread for Korean tastes, quickly winning over Korean palates. The name “hopang” (호빵) comes from the Korean “ho-ho” sound people make as they blow on the hot bread to cool it before eating. Just hearing the name brings to mind the warm, comforting image of enjoying a hot snack in the cold winter.

The original hopang was filled with sweet red bean paste, which remains a classic favorite for many Koreans. Over time, however, a variety of flavors have been introduced to offer more choices. Today, there are hopang varieties with pizza, meat, and vegetable fillings, making it a versatile snack that can even serve as a light meal. Recently, healthier options such as whole wheat hoppang and vegetable-filled versions have been introduced to cater to a wider range of preferences.

Hopang is easily found at convenience stores and supermarkets, where they are often piled up near the entrance as winter approaches. The steam machines keep them warm and ready to eat, adding to the appeal of enjoying them on a cold day. Moreover, recent advancements have made it possible to heat hoppang conveniently in the microwave, so people can enjoy them anytime, anywhere.

As a representative winter snack, hopang holds a special place in Koreans' hearts, evoking nostalgia and fond memories. For many, it is not just a simple snack but a symbol of winter warmth—a taste of childhood memories shared with parents, or moments spent with friends buying hopang at school.

 How to Prepare Hopang

1. Steaming Method

The best way to enjoy hopang (호빵) in its softest, most moist state is by steaming it. Simply place a small amount of water in a pot, bring it to a boil, then set the hopang in a steamer for about 10 minutes. The steam keeps the hopang fully moist, resulting in a soft and tender texture that enhances the flavor of the filling. This method allows you to savor hoppang’s warmth on a chilly winter day, making it the most delicious way to enjoy this treat.

2. Rice Cooker Method

A rice cooker is a convenient tool to warm up hopang with gentle, even heat. Add a small amount of water to the rice cooker, place the hopang inside, and use the ‘Keep Warm’ or ‘Cook’ setting to heat it for about 5 to 10 minutes. This method warms the hopang thoroughly, creating a soft, warm snack without the need for a steamer. It’s a simple yet effective way to enjoy a cozy treat in a matter of minutes.

3. Microwave Method

In a rush? The microwave offers a quick way to heat hopang. Place the hopang on a plate, sprinkle a bit of water to prevent it from drying out, and cover it with a lid to retain moisture. For a 600W microwave, heat the hopang for about 1 to 1.5 minutes. Covering it is essential to prevent the moisture from escaping, ensuring that the hopang stays soft and warm.
